Image is of Captain Adam Kramer of the 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry. He stands leaning against a high backed chair over which is draped a curtain or dark colored flag. It is hard to tell for. Kramer wears a dark forge cap with crossed cavalry sabers on the front of the crown, a dark frock coat with matching trousers and vest. Clearly visible on his coat are Captains shoulder straps.

Image is extremely clear and clean with excellent contrast. Mount corners are slightly clipped.

Reverse has photographer's imprint of MORSE'S GALLERY OF THE CUMBERLAND... NASHVILLE, TENN. Above this is a strong period ink inscription that reads "ADAM KRAMER CAPT. CO. "M" 15TH PENNA. CAV. MARCH 20, 1864." Below the photographer's imprint is some collector information in pencil.

Adam Kramer was born in Germany and emigrated to the United States. He enlisted in the Regular Army on May 16, 1857. He was assigned to Company F of the 2nd US Dragoons and was discharged on May 16, 1862 at the expiration of his term of service.

Kramer enlisted for a second time s a Private in Company I, 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry on September 6, 1862 and was promoted to Sergeant on October 30, 1862. He received a commission to 1st Lieutenant of Company B on March 1, 1863 and a little over two months later he was promoted to Captain of Company M on May 8, 1863. He was mustered out at Nashville, Tennessee on June 21, 1865.

In December of 1865 he returned to the Regular Army and served until 1897 serving with the 2nd nd 6th US Cavalry. He earned a brevet promotion to Major for gallant service against hostile Indians at Ash Creek, Arizona on July 17, 1882. It was also noted that Buffalo Bill Cody began his service as a Scout in Kramer's Company.

Adam Kramer died in Iowa City, Iowa on November 12, 1901. He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

A fantastic image a true cavalryman who served his adopted nation for most of his life.  [ad]
