This is a three-quarter seated view of Cullum as a Brigadier General. The image is by E. & H. T. Anthony from a Brady negative. This is a clear image with good contrast. General Cullum is shown wearing a double-breasted frock coat with black velvet collar and cuffs, General officer’s waist belt and sword with an overcoat draped over one shoulder. A bold, ink inscription on the bottom reads "Brig. Gen. Cullum."

George Washington Cullum was born in New York City on February 25, 1809 but was raised in Meadville, Pennsylvania. He graduated from West Point ranking 3rd in the Class of 1833. Cullum served in the Corps of Engineers building at Fort Trumbull in New London, Connecticut and then served as an instructor at West Point.

At the start of the war Collum served on Winfield Scott’s staff and then chief engineer of the Department of Missouri. He was active in the Siege of Corinth where he directed engineering operations. From 1864-1866 he was superintendent at West Point. He retired from the Army January 13, 1874. He died in New York City in 1892.
