This is a vignette bust view of Moore in uniform. He sports quite a bit of hair on his head and face and only the top two rows of buttons on his uniform can be seen.

Image is clear with good contrast. Paper and mount have light surface dirt. Bottom of mount has period pencil inscription that reads “LT. COL. MOORE.”

Stephen Moore was born in Brunswick, New Jersey on February 12, 1821. At the age of 14 he went into the grocery business and remained in that field of endeavor until the out brake of the Civil War. By that time he had quite a large business and was commander of the New Jersey State Militia.

On April 27, 1861 Moore was commissioned Lieutenant Colonel of the 3^rd New Jersey Infantry. During his three months service he was placed in command of units guarding the ammunition and commissary trains of General McDowell’s army. After the expiration of his term he was mustered out at Trenton, New Jersey.

Moore was once again commissioned a Lieutenant Colonel on August 14, 1862. This time he was with the 11^th New Jersey. Moore was present with the regiment at Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. In the last named action Moore was reported as killed but it was later determined that his horse was shot out from under him and that he passed out from heatstroke and was thought to be killed. Moore recovered but was unfit for further field service.

In the fall of 1863 Moore joined the Veteran Reserve Corps and was assigned to command of the Sherburne Barracks in Washington, D.C. In January of 1864 he was sent to Elmira, New York to serve as President of a Court-Martial Board that was sitting there. In October of 1864 he was given command of the guards of the prison there and served in that capacity till the end of the war.

From 1866-1868 he was with the Freedman’s  Bureau in North Carolina and was eventually discharged on January 1, 1869.
