Image shows Sergeant Charles Lassen seated by a table covered with an embroidered cloth. Lassen wears a dark frock coat with Sergeant chevrons buttoned at the throat. Beneath the coat he wears a dark military vest. He also wears light trousers with a dark wide leg stripe.

Image is clear and clean with good contrast. Mount corners are clipped. Image has a faint crease down the middle.

Reverse has a photographer’s imprint for LE RUE LEMER… HARRISBURG. Bottom of reverse has a period ink signature that reads “CHARLES LASSON / SERGT. 15TH US INFANTRY.” There is also a canceled blue 2 cent tax stamp and some light scattered surface dirt.

Charles Lessen was carried on the rolls as “LASSON” and “LASSEN.” The former is the correct spelling as found on his grave and in the inscription on the reverse of the image. He enlisted in Philadelphia on November 19, 1862 for three years. He is described as being 5’ 11” tall with hazel eyes, light hair and a fair complexion. Records also say that he was born in Bergen, Norway but when he came to the US is not known. He was assigned to Company E, 15th US Infantry.

The 15th US Infantry saw action at Shiloh, Corinth, Stones River, Chickamauga, Chattanooga and the Atlanta Campaign.

Lasson was discharged as a Sergeant on November 19, 1865 at Mobile, Alabama.

After the war Lasson lived in Texas where he married in 1884 and applied for a pension in 1889. When he died is not known but he is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Dallas, Texas.  [ad]
