Standard pre-printed “To all Whom it may Concern” form, 8.5 x11.” Exhibits fold-marks and slight yellowing. Records Corporal Kirby’s dates of service—enlistment 8/13/1862, discharge 6/1/1865. Vital statistics: Residence—Carroll County, Ohio/ Age—24/ Height—5’10.5”/ Complexion—dark/ hair—brown/ Eyes-dark.
Accompanying CDV, attributed to Kirby, has no back-mark. Features a bust image of young mustachioed soldier in standing pose, in uniform. Kepi & coat & vest, with sergeant stripes. Image clean, though somewhat legible.
Kirby enlisted on 8/13/62 as a Private, at the age of 24. On 8/21/62 he mustered into Co. H, 98th Ohio. Promoted to Corporal on 10/15/63. Mustered out on 6/1/65 at Washington, DC.
Kirby’s regiment, the 98th Ohio, served exclusively in the western theater, attached to the Armies of the Ohio & Cumberland. Participated in the Battles of Perryville, Chickamauga, the Siege of Chattanooga, all major engagement of the Atlanta Campaign, the March to the Sea and through the Carolinas. During service the unit lost 120 men killed or mortally wounded and 127 by disease for a total of 247.
