Dated 1862, this beautiful panoramic view of Washington, DC measures 4 inches wide by 43 inches long at full spread. It folds to postcard size of 4 inches by 6 and 1/ 2 inches. Titled “Alexandria and Georgetown” and depicting wartime Washington from the Potomac River, it is superbly colored in shades of green, pink and sand. Structures, ships, boats, locomotives and people are sharply discernable. Each Washington landmark is captioned in print at the bottom edge; the Washington Monument is noticeably unfinished. The cover features an equestrian statue of George Washington, flanked by a Zouave soldier and infantryman. Condition is very good with few scattered water stains on the upper third of the view and a 1 inch tear at the far left corner. There is splitting along three of the seams, most notably at the last section.
An excellent wartime souvenir; likely popular among soldiers transiting the capital to send home to friends and family. [JC]
