Image has good clarity and contrast. Mount and paper are in nice condition. Mount corners have very light wear. Bottom of mount has a period ink inscription “Sergt. Robert Heron Company {C} 88th Regt. P.V.V.”  Reverse has a photographer’s imprint for S.D. Wilson of Philadelphia. There is also some collector information in pencil as well.

Robert Herron resided in Philadelphia, PA. He enlisted on August 24,1861 as a Private. In company "C" 88^th PA Infantry. He was wounded twice; at 2^nd Bull Run and at Spotsylvania. He was promoted to 1^st Sergt and then 1^st Lieut. (12/18/1864).

He was mustered out of service on June 30, 1865 at Washington, DC. He died October 28, 1922 in Conshohocken, PA and is buried in Merion Memorial Park Cemetery, Bala Cynwyd, PA.

The 88th Pennsylvania was organized in September of 1861. They served in the Army of the Potomac from October, 1861 to March, 1862 when they were shifted to the defenses of Washington and the Department of the Rappahannock. In June of 1862 they joined the 3rd Corps in the Army of the Potomac and in September of that same year they were shifted to the 1st Corps where they remained until consolidation with the 5th Corps in early 1864.

The 88th saw action in 42 engagements including 2nd Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna, Cold Harbor, Siege of Petersburg and Five Forks. The regiment suffered 181 deaths and many others wounded.  [jet]
