Image shows bust view of Stevens in officer’s double breasted frock with shoulder straps. Image is clear with good contrast. Reverse has photographer’s imprint, Kinball of Concord, NH, along with ink signature at bottom. Modern collector’s notes in pencil.
Stevens enlisted on May 3, 1861 as a Major in the “field & staff” of 2nd NH Infantry. He was offered a commission as Lt. Colonel of the 9th NH Infantry which he declined and then resigned from the Army on July 25, 1862. He died on October 26, 1875.
The 2nd NH had a distinguished fighting career and was engaged in all major battles in the Easter Theater although Josiah Stevens may have only witnessed the Battle of Bull Run prior to his resignation. [jet]
