Image shows bust view of Huntoon in officer’s frock with shoulder straps. Image is clear with good contrast. Oval image on mount with pre-printed oval border. Reverse has no photographer’s imprint. Modern collector’s notes in pencil. Identified by “History of 12th NHV”.
Huntoon enlisted on August 22, 1862 as a 2/Lt. in Company “E” of 12th NH Infantry. He was promoted to 1/Lt. on February 9, 1863 and Captain on February 1, 1864. Lt. Huntoon was shot in the arm at Chancellorsville and captured. Returned to regiment. He was discharged due to his wounds on June 15, 1864. He became a doctor and lived in Washington, DC after the war. He died on July 20, 1923 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
The 12th NH had a distinguished fighting career and was engaged in all major battles in the Easter Theater starting with the Battle of Fredericksburg. The regiment lost a total of 320 men during service; 11 officers and 170 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded, 1 officer and 138 enlisted men died of disease. [jet]
