Image shows view of Cooper’s head and neck. He wears a typical early war militia style kepi and trimmed collar of jacket in the image. Company letter “A” mounted on front of kepi. Image is clear with good contrast. Reverse is blank save collector’s pencil identification.

Cooper enlisted on May 4, 1861 at New York City, NY as a Sergeant in the 9th New York Infantry “Hawkins Zouaves”. He was promoted to QM Sergeant immediately and to 2/Lt. on November 23, 1861. He was killed on September 17, 1862 at Antietam, MD and is buried in Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn, NY.  Cooper was killed when the 9th charged forward under heavy artillery fire. The regimental commander wrote in his report, “We have to lament the death of Second Lieutenant E. C. Cooper, who was wounded just as we commenced the charge. He thought the wound a light one and refused to be carried from the field. He was a good officer, a brave man, and a gallant soldier and much beloved, and his loss is deeply regretted by the regiment.” Burial at Green-Wood was on October 2, 1862, Section 56, lot 6844.

The regiment lost 233 killed, wounded and missing at Antietam.   [jet]
