Image is a seated view of a Union private wearing a dark frock coat open to show his light striped civilian vest. He also wears dark trousers.
Image has good clarity and contrast. Paper and mount have light scattered surface dirt. Top center has signs of a removed staple. Bottom left corner of the mount is chipped. Bottom has period ink ID “MR. JOHN J. WILLIAMS, N.Y.”
Reverse has no photographer’s imprint but does have a second period ink ID “MR. JOHN J. WILLIAMS, N.Y.”
Image came in with a group of 115th New York Infantry images and that regiment did have a soldier named John J. Williams. Whether or not this is the same man is not known. [ad]
