CDV view of 1st Sergeant George M. VanRensselaer of Company E, 115th New York. He is seated with his legs crossed with one arm resting on a table next to his forage cap. He wears an open dark frock coat with 1st sergeant chevrons and light trousers with a dark NCO leg stripe. At his waist is his sash and belt with pattern 1851 NCO plate.
Image is clear with excellent contrast. Paper and mount are good with light edge wear.
Reverse has no photographer’s imprint. Top has a period pencil inscription “GEORGE M. VANRENSSELAER” with a lot of collector information in pencil.
George M. Van Rensselaer was born in Germany and came to the United States. He was a 23 year old laborer when he enlisted as a corporal at Bleeker, New York in Company E, 115th New York Infantry on August 14, 1862.
Corporal Van Rensselaer was captured with his regiment at Harper’s Ferry on September 15, 1862 and paroled the next day. He was promoted 1st sergeant on November 11, 1862 and wounded at Olustee on February 20, 1864 and again at Deep Bottom on August 16, 1864. He was mustered out at Raleigh, North Carolina on June 17, 1865. [ad]
