Nathan Jewett Johnson was born on August 22, 1822 in Granville, New York. By the time he reached adulthood he was a successful farmer and lawyer.

Johnson was commissioned captain of Company I, 93^rd New York on December 11, 1861. The 93^rd was assigned to the Army of the Potomac where it served in the 4^th Corps on the Peninsula before being assigned as Provost Marshall of the army. In March of 1864 the 93^rd was assigned to the 2^nd Corps and a month later Captain Johnson was discharged for promotion in the 115^th New York.

Johnson was commissioned lieutenant colonel of the 115^th New York on April 13, 1864. He saw action at Chester Station, Drewry’s Bluff, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Deep Bottom, Chaffin’s Farm and Fort Fisher. During his service with the 115^th Johnson was wounded three times, at Deep Bottom on August 18, 1864, Chaffin’s Farm on August 1, 1864 and at Fort Fisher on January 15, 1865.

Near the war’s end Johnson was promoted to colonel by brevet on March 13, 1865 and permanently to colonel on April 29^th of that same year. He was mustered out at Raleigh, North Carolina on June 17, 1865.

After the war Johnson practiced law in Saratoga County, New York. He died on October 19, 1894 and is buried in Broadalbin-Mayfield Rural Cemetery.  [ad]
