View is of Colonel Charles E. Griswold standing by a balustrade and holding his forage cap in his hand. He wears a dark double-breasted frock coat with shoulder straps, a thin sash and waistbelt with rectangular plate.

Image is clear with good contrast. Mount and paper have light surface dirt around the edges with minor foxing at bottom. Center bottom of mount has a period pencil inscription of “COL. GRISWOLD – 22.”

Reverse has photographer’s imprint for BLACK…BOSTON. ID is confirmed by several other images of Griswold that we have recently handled.

Charles Edward Griswold was born in Boston on November 16, 1834. He was a graduate of Norwich University and was a merchant in Boston when he was commissioned lieutenant colonel of the 22nd Massachusetts on September 12, 1861. He would be made colonel on June 16, 1862.

The 22nd was assigned to the 3rd Corps of the Army of the Potomac and was engaged on the Peninsula at Yorktown, Mechanicsville, Gaines’ Mill and Malvern Hill. They were also present for Antietam after which Colonel Griswold resigned due to ill health.

Griswold was next commissioned colonel of the 56th Massachusetts on July 14, 1863. The 56th was assigned to the 9th Corps and saw action for the first time in the Wilderness. On the second day of that battle the 56th was heavily engaged near the intersection of the Brock and Plank Roads. Colonel Griswold was shot in the neck and killed while rallying his men during the fighting.

Colonel Griswold’s body was returned to Massachusetts and buried in Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge.  [ad]
