CDV is of Colonel Matthew R. McClennan in a classic Napoleonic pose leaning on his Model 1860 Field & Staff Officer’s sword. He wears a dark double-breasted frock coat with light trousers. Frock coat looks to have lieutenant colonels shoulder straps. At McClennan’s waist is his belt with rectangular plate.

Clarity and contrast are excellent. Mount and paper have only light surface dirt. Mount corners are clipped.

Reverse has photographer’s imprint for GEO. A. LENZI…NORRISTOWN, PA. Bottom has a strong ink ID “M. R. McCLENNAN, COL. 138TH PA. VOLS.”

Matthew Robert McClennen was born in Norristown, Pennsylvania on September 24, 1834. He was employed in an iron works and then as a printer before being commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in Company B, 4th Pennsylvania Infantry for 3 months service. He was mustered out on July 27, 1861.

McClennan next served ass Captain of Company A, 138th Pennsylvania Infantry being commissioned on August 20, 1862 and by the following September 2nd he had been promoted lieutenant colonel.

The 138th was assigned to the 8th Corps in the Middle Department and was used to guard railroads. During this time McClennan was promoted to Colonel on May 2, 1863.

After the battle of Gettysburg it was attached to the 3rd Corps of the Army of the Potomac for the pursuit of Lee’s Army. That November during the Mine Run Campaign McClennan was slightly wounded.

During the reorganization of the Army of the Potomac in early 1864 the 138th became part of the 6th Corps and was engaged at Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Monocacy, Winchester, Fisher’s Hill, Cedar Creek, Peterburg and Sailor’s Creek.

On April 2, 1865 McClennan received a brevet promotion to Brigadier General. He was mustered out at Washington, D.C. on June 23, 1865.

After the war McClennan returned to Norristown and continued in the printing business until his death on May 29, 1872 and was buried in Montgomery Cemetery in gravesite A179.  [ad]
