Image is a bust view of George H. Hanson wearing a dark civilian suit. Beneath the image is a strong period ink signature “YOUR FRIEND GEO. H. HANSON.”
Image has good clarity and passable contrast. Paper has some stains off to the side of Hanson’s head but these do not hurt the image.
Reverse has photographer’s imprint for O. H. WILLARD’S…PHILA. There is also some collector information in pencil.
George H. Hanson was born on March 7, 1843. He enlisted as a private in Company I, 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry on October 3, 1862. He was transferred to Company B and promoted to corporal on March 16, 1865 and was mustered out at Nashville, Tennessee on June 21, 1865.
The 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry was organized in October of 1862 and was assigned to the Army of the Cumberland. The regiment saw action at Stones River, Mossy Creek and several smaller skirmishes. During its service the regiment lost 128 officers and men killed, died of wounds and disease plus many others wounded.
Hanson died on March 31, 1918 in Merion, Pennsylvania. He is buried in Westminster Cemetery, Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania. [ad]
