Bust view of Edward J. Shephard wearing a dark frock coat.
Image has good clarity and contrast. Paper is cut and fitted into a gold d oval frame printed on the face of the mount. Mount has some minor foxing along the top and right edge.
Reverse has photographer’s imprint for GEO. W. BARNES…ROCKFORD, ILL. Top has what looks to be a period pencil ID that reads “EDWARD SHEPARD.” Below is collector information in a different hand also in pencil.
Edward J. Shephard was born in Ireland and later came to the United States.
He first enlisted as a private in Company K, 51st Pennsylvania Emergency Regiment on July 3, 1863 and mustered out on September 2, 1863.
Next, Shephard enlisted as a private in Company A, 1st Wisconsin Heavy Artillery at Alexandria, Virginia on November 1, 1864 and was discharged on August 14, 1865. During his service Battery A was part of the Defenses of Washington.
After the war Shephard lived in Philadelphia where he worked as a tailor. Sometime in the 1890’s he entered the National Home for Disabled Soldiers in Dayton, Ohio. He died there on April 30, 1917 and is buried in the National Cemetery there. [ad]
