CDV shows John Delancey Neill posed with his arms folded across his chest. He wears a dark kepi with “US” within a wreath on the front of the crown, dark frock coat with 1^st lieutenant of staff shoulder straps and dark trousers.

Image has excellent clarity and contrast. Paper and mount are good.

Reverse has very small photographer’s imprint along the bottom that reads ROCKWOOD…BROADWAY, N.Y. Very nice period ink inscription of “LIEUT. J. DELANCY NEILL, NEW YORK CITY. WASHINGTON, D.C. DEC. 15^TH 1862.” There is also some collector information in pencil at bottom.

John Delancey Neill was born in New York. He was 20 years old when he was commissioned a 1^st lieutenant in Company F, 101^st New York Infantry on December 31, 1861. Neill had earlier service with Company I, 7^th New York Militia.

Neill served with the 101^st through the Peninsula Campaign being engaged at Fair Oaks, Savage’s Station, and Malvern Hill. After the army left the Peninsula the 101^st was engaged at 2^nd Bull Run, Chantilly and Fredericksburg.

On Christmas Eve of 1862 the 101^st was consolidated and Neill was mustered out.

Niell next was offered commission as 1^st lieutenant in the 5^th New York Cavalry on January 1, 1863 but he declined the commission. [AD]
