CDV is of Edward C. Richardson posed in front of a desk holding his Model 1850 Foot Officer’s sword. He wears a dark frock coat with captain’s shoulder straps and dark trousers. At his waist is his sword belt and sash.

Image has excellent clarity and contrast. Paper and mount are good. Bottom of mount is signed in period ink “EDW. C. RICHARDSON, CAPT. CO. G MASS 24^th.” Ink has some slight smudges done at the time the ID was written.

Reverse has photographer’s imprint for WHIPPLE…BOSTON.

Edward Cyrenius Richardson was a 21 year old merchant living in Boston when he was commissioned Captain of Company G, 24^th Massachusetts. He was promoted major on June 1, 1864 and was discharged for disability on September 14, 1864.

The 24^th Massachusetts served most of its time with the 10^th Corps in the Department of the South and was later in the Army of the James and near the end of the war it was transferred to the 24^th Corps. The regiment was engaged at Roanoke Island, New Bern, Tranter’s Creek, Drewry’s Bluff, Bermuda Hundred, Deep Bottom and Petersburg.

With the image are some collector’s notes about Captain Richardson in regards to him being mentioned in the Official Records and the 24^th’s regimental history.

After the war Richardson was agent for the Clark shipping Line between Boston and Halifax and also for the Savannah and Boston line.

He died in Boston in 1919.  [AD]
