The coat has a watch chain running from one button to a pocket watch tucked in an exterior left breast pocket. Handley wears his waist belt with rectangular plate and a cap box with a brass regimental number “6” on the outer flap.

Image is clear with good contrast. Paper and mount ar also good.

Reverse has photographer’s imprint for J. C. RICHARDSON… BOSTON. Top left has a very nice strong period ink ID of “A. C. HANDLEY CAPT. CO E, SIXTH REGT MASS VOLS.” There is also a small amount of collector information in modern pencil.

Aaron Chaffin Handley was born in Acton, Massachusetts on October 7, 1823. He was the son of a veteran of the War of 1812 and a grandson of a Revolutionary War veteran. After a common school education Handley went into business as a butcher in his hometown of Acton.

On April 2, 1862 39 year old Handley received a commission as Captain of Company E, 6th Massachusetts Militia. He was serving in that capacity when the regiment volunteered for 9 months service on August 31, 1862.

The 6th was assigned to the 7th Corps in the Department of Virginia and took part in the defense of Suffolk against a large force under General Longstreet. During their service the regiment lost 6 men killed, 29 wounded and 13 captured.

Handley and the 6th were mustered out of Federal service on June 3, 1863 at Lowell, Mass.

After the war Handley continued in the butcher business and also sat in the Massachusetts State House of Representatives in 1856, 1864, 1890 and 1891. He was an active member of the Isaac Davis Post #138 of the GAR.

Captain Handley died on November 5, 1896 in Acton and is buried there in Woodlawn Cemetery.  [ad]
