CDV is a full standing view of Captain Josiah Soule, Jr. posed by a chair with one hand in his coat and the other resting on his hip. He wears a dark frock coat and light trousers. His captain’s shoulder straps are clearly visible. At his waist he wears a sash and sword belt with rectangular eagle plate and attached Model 1850 foot officer’s sword. A nice looking forage cap sits on the chair next to him. The cap has an infantry hunting horn insignia on the front with a regimental number that under magnification can be deciphered as “43.”

Clarity and contrast are excellent. Mount and paper are good.

Reverse has photographer’s imprint for FISHER BROS…BOSTON.

The ID is confirmed by two similar online images.

Josiah Soule was born in Massachusetts on February 25, 1829. He was working as a shoe manufacturer in East Abington when he was commissioned a 1st lieutenant in Company G, 43rd Massachusetts Infantry on September 12, 1862. He would later be promoted to captain on October 22, 1862.

The 43rd was a nine month regiment and was assigned to the Department of North Carolina and later became part of the 18th Corps. The regiment saw action at Whitehall, Goldsboro, Blount’s Creek and Little Washington.

Captain Soule was mustered out with his Company on July 30, 1863.

On July 18, 1864 Soule accepted a commission as captain of Company A, 60th Massachusetts. This was a sixty day regiment and served in Baltimore before being sent to Indianapolis, Indiana where they guarded Confederate prisoners. Soule and his Company were mustered out at Indianapolis on November 30, 1864.

After his service he returned to his business in Abington and later was an active member of the Hartsuff Post #74 of the GAR in Rockland.

Josiah Soule died in Abington on October 5, 1870 and is buried there in Mount Vernon Cemetery.  [ad]
