Bust view CDV of Dr. Clinton P. Lawrence as a 1st lieutenant of the 4th New York Heavy Artillery. He wears a dark frock coat and his shoulder straps can barely be seen.

Image clarity and contrast is good. Paper and mount are also in good condition.

Reverse has photographer’s imprint for WHITEHURST…WASHINTON, D.C. Old, but not period, ink inscription reads “DR. LAWRENCE THE MAN THAT DRESSED J. T. L. WOUND JUNE 18th 1864.” At bottom is another inscription. This one is in period pencil and reads “CLINTON P. LAWRENCE, ASST SURGEON, 4th N.Y. A.”

Lawrence was 26 years old when he was commissioned assistant surgeon of the 4th New York Heavy Artillery on June 11, 1863. He resigned on February 23, 1865.

The 4th New York Heavy Artillery saw action as infantry with the 2nd Corps of the Army of the Potomac from Wilderness to Appomattox. During its entire service from December 1861 to September 1865 they lost 12 officers and 442 enlisted men killed, died of wounds and disease plus many others wounded and survived.  [ad]
