Image shows Clinton P. Lawrence in a dark frock coat with 1st lieutenant of staff shoulder straps.

Image has excellent clarity and contrast. Paper and mount are good and show only minor light surface dirt.

Reverse has a photographer’s imprint for WHITEHURST…WASHINGTON, D.C. Period ink inscription reads “DR. LAWRENCE 4th N.Y. HVY ARTY 1863.”

Lawrence was 26 years old when he was commissioned assistant surgeon of the 11th New York Heavy Artillery on June 11, 1863 but that regiment failed to organize and the Companies already formed were transferred to the 4th New York Heavy Artillery on October 16, 1863. Lawrence would remain with the 4th until his resignation on February 23, 1865.

The 4th New York Heavy Artillery saw action as infantry with the 2nd Corps of the Army of the Potomac from Wilderness to Appomattox. During its entire service from December 1861 to September 1865 they lost 12 officers and 442 enlisted men killed, died of wounds and disease plus many others wounded and survived.  [AD] [PH:L]
