Winfield Scott’s military career began in 1808. As a Major General he led the US Army in the capture of Mexico City during the Mexican War. When the Civil War came he was old and unable to take field command of an Army. He devised the famous “Anaconda Plan” which was basically the strategy that won the war. He resigned in November of 1861.
