Waist up seated view of John A. Dix as a Major General. Image is bright and clear with good contrast. This is an E. & H.T. Anthony print made from a Brady negative and so stated on the back. Also on the back is a revenue tax stamp and pencil inscription “Major Gen. Dix.”
Dix’s father was killed in the War of 1812. Dix himself fought in the battle of Lundy’s Lane in 1814 when he was fourteen years old. He left the Army in 1828 and became a lawyer in upstate New York. He served in the US Senate from 1845-1849. Dix also served as Secretary of the Treasury late in the Buchanan administration. When the Civil War came Dix was appointed a Major general on May 16, 1861. He served throughout the war in garrison and Department commands. After the war he served as Minister to France and Governor of New York.
