This is a bust view of Thomas as a Brigadier General. Contrast is good but the paper surface shows moderate wear none of which really affects the subject. There is no photographer’s back mark.
Thomas was born in Virginia. He graduated from West Point in 1840 and served in the Mexican War where he won promotion for gallantry at Monterey and Buena Vista. He stayed loyal when the Civil War broke out and served n the Western Theater of war. Thomas fought at Mill Springs, Shiloh, Perryville, Stone’s River and Chickamauga. In the latter battle his defensive fighting earned him the name “The Rock of Chickamauga.” He also commanded The Army of the Cumberland at Nashville in 1864.
