3/4 standing view of Rosecrans as a Brigadier General with his hand tucked in his coat in the classic Napoleonic pose. Image is clear with good contrast. Rosecrans graduated 5th in the Class of 1842 at West Point. Serving in the Engineers he took no part in the war with Mexico. During the Civil War he served out West. He is best known for commanding the Union Army of the Cumberland at the Battle of Stones River. He then maneuvered the Confederates out of Chattanooga but was defeated at Chickamauga.
