Very nice mid chest up view of Hoffman as a Major General. Image is mounted on a white card with red border. Back has imprint for J A. Scholten, St. Louis, Mo. Pencil inscription on back reads “General Hoffman.” There is what looks like a small water stain along one edge. This does not affect the image.
William Hoffman was an 1829 graduate of West Point and served in the war with Mexico. During the Civil War he was Commissary General of Prisoners. He won two Brevet promotions for his work in this capacity, one to Brigadier General on October 7, 1864 and one to Major General on March 13, 1865.
