Profile bust view of Horace Elmer in Midshipman’s uniform. Photographer’s backmark is “J.D. Fowler & Co., Opposite U.S. Naval Academy, Newport, R. I.” Image is clear with some foxing near the bottom that does not effect the image. Collector ID on back.
Horace Elmer was born in New Jersey in 1845. He entered the Naval Academy at fourteen years old and graduated in 1864. He sailed to China on the USS Hartford and in 1870 he was Executive Officer on the monitor USS Terror. He was on the USS Colorado during the Virginius episode and from 1879-1881 he was Executive Officer on the USS Kearsarge. He commanded the USS Jamestown and later the USS Kearsarge. He left the USS Kearsarge just before she was wrecked. He then commanded the USS Marblehead. He was then placed in command of the “mosquito fleet” and was to be it’s commander but he died on April 26, 1898 of respiratory problems. At the time of his death Elmer was a Commander.
