This CDV shows a young clean-shaven Union cavalryman with one arm resting on the base of a column posed in front of a painted backdrop of a military camp scene.

The subject wears a forage cap with a dark cavalry shell jacket closed at the throat but not buttoned. Beneath the jacket is a light colored military vest. He also wears light trousers with knee high boots. On the left breast of the jacket is some kind of ID badge and the shoulders of the jacket have anchors for shoulder scales. A close look at the subject’s forage cap reveals crossed sabers on the front flanked by two letters. The letter on the right is definitely a “Y” but the one on the left cannot be made out.

The painted backdrop shows a Sibley tent pitched between two “A” tents along the backs of a river.

The reverse has a photographer’s imprint for HOLLYLAND, WASHINGTON, D.C.

Image is clear and bright with good contrast and only light scattered surface dirt from age and storage.
