Image shows a clean shaven Union soldier in his early 20s wearing a dark forage cap, bowtie, frock coat and trousers. The coat is a regulation musician’s frock coat with the proper chest piping. He has a snare drum in front of him ready to play. The drum is hung about his neck by a white cloth sling with a central dark stripe. At the bottom of the sling is a heart shaped tab with a leather drop that holds a snap hook for connecting to the drum. The subject holds his drumsticks in the playing position.
Image has excellent contrast and clarity with only light scattered surface dirt.
Reverse has a photographer’s imprint for S.C. ABBOTT, HAMILTON, N.Y. There is also a collector’s code in pencil.
Very nice image. [sl]
