A vignetted mid-chest-up view of a young U.S. Navy officer. The card has the backmark of Wm. Stroud of Norristown, Pa., which is along the Schuylkill River and just six miles outside the Philadelphia city limits, so it is likely he enlisted in that city. The Philadelphia Navy Yard found itself extremely busy during the Civil War as more southerly facilities were taken over by southern forces and was heavily involved in the supply and repair of the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron. The photographer tinted our man’s shoulder strap, slightly obscuring the detail. There is small glue stain on the reverse of the card, but no sign of a tax stamp. [SR]
