CDV is a period copy of a tintype. This was often done when a soldier was killed or died of disease and friends and family wanted photos to remember him. It was also an inexpensive way for a soldier to make duplicates of an image to give to comrades and friends.
Photo is a three-quarter seated view of a Union soldier wearing a Hardee hat in the regulation style with a hat cord, infantry hunting horn insignia with the numeral “33” at center and a company letter “H” above. Subject also wears a dark frock coat with brass shoulder scales and light trousers.
The soldier’s waist belt is a bit unusual in that it consists of a thin strip of leather and is fastened by a plain roller buckle. Visible at the soldier’s side is the long handle of a fighting knife. He holds the knife in his belt with his left hand. Knife looks to be a photographer’s prop.
Image is clear with good contrast. Mount has been trimmed and the corners clipped.
Reverse has no photographer’s imprint. Orange 2 cent tax stamp is present. [ad]
