The 138th Pennsylvania was raised in early August of 1862. The regiment was sent to Baltimore in late August and remained there guarding the railroad until June of 1863 and eventually joined the 3rd Corps of the Army of the Potomac for the pursuit of Lee’s army after Gettysburg. The 138th was assigned to the 6th Corps after the reorganization of the Army of the Potomac and were engaged at Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Monocacy, Winchester, Fisher’s Hill, Cedar Creek, Petersburg and Sailor’s Creek.

During its service the regiment lost 7 officers and 160 enlisted men killed and died of wounds and disease plus many others wounded and recovered.  [ad]
