The unknown subject of this image wears a battle shirt that would be gray trimmed in red on the collar and down the front. The shoulders have rectangular epaulettes that also would be red while the cuffs would be red with long extended points radiating around the cuff. Each of the rectangles on the shoulder has five buttons while down the front are another nine. Also, each of the points on the cuffs ends with a button. The most dramatic piece of the uniform is a large sunflower on the right breast. This would have had a yellow center with red petals. The subject also wears a kepi that would have been gray with red piping with a red band around the base. Barley visible around the subject’s waist is his leather waist belt worn above solid gray trousers. The subject holds his Model 1841 Mississippi Rifle diagonally across his chest. This soldier is young, perhaps 20 years old at most. The photographer has touched his cheeks with a bit of rose colored tint which accentuates the soldiers youth.

The image is clear and crisp with great contrast and just a bit of shadowing off to one side and around the soldier’s head. The image comes in a wonderful thermo-plastic case with a geometric design on the exterior and a crushed velvet red lining. The image is housed in a sparkling clean decorated mat and frame.

The Sunflower Dispersers were raised in Sunflower County, Mississippi and served as Company B, 3rd Mississippi Infantry. The regiment saw action at Bolivar, Vicksburg, Helena, Port Hudson, Grenada, Wyatts, Peachtree Creek, Franklin and Nashville.

Looking at this wonderful image one can only wonder who this soldier was and if he was fortunate enough to survive the war. This is truly a very, very rare and unique Confederate image.
