A nice seated view of a Federal cavalryman wearing the issue 1854 shell jacket and a pair of gauntlets , holding ether an model 1840 or 1860 saber, along with his fatigue cap. This ambrotype (glass plate) photo is mounted in a protective brass-gilt mat stamped with an array of patriotic symbols such as American flags, nautical and artillery scenes and the motto of “Constitution and Union” within in a ribbon.
This photograph and mat are housed in a period Thermoplastic molded case with a raised design image of a standing figure clasping a sword and wearing what appears to be a Havelock headdress. This central figure is surround by a grouping of floral designs. The photo does have a few condition issues, as there are some losses of the emulsion on the plate above the head area and two dots located above the left shoulder. The case has scattered chipped damages located around its bottom edges.
The case has the manufacturer’s information (Littlefield, Parsons & Co.) printed on a paper insert located beneath the photograph. Written on this paper in period ink is “Jane (Endicott) Ellis”. Perhaps further research would reveal the identity of this cavalryman.
