Larger format tintypes like this full-plate usually lack the clarity of the smaller sizes. This one is an exceptionally clear portrait of a young, Union first lieutenant with the photographer focusing on his face. The officer is posed against a plain backdrop that emphasizes him and looks off to the viewer’s left. He wears the regulation single-breasted line officer’s coat and his buttons are three-piece construction, either state or staff. The latter is a good possibility since his shoulder straps show a darker ground and the single bar makes him a good candidate for a regimental adjutant or member of a general officer’s staff. He is certainly youthful, but has a serious, business-only look.
The photo is in very good condition, without bends or creases. There is only one spot of emulsion damage- a short vertical mark about midway between his face the edge of the plate, which does not affect the image. It has been taped in a paper mount for display, but would look even better framed. [sr]
