Beautiful CDV-sized tintype with superb clarity, featuring three full-standing armed soldiers.
The rifles appear to be .58 cal Springfields (or contract variants). Each man wears a slouch hat and jacket with epaulet loops, piping and a single button on the collars, and light-colored flashing on their cuffs. Their visible accoutrements include cartridge boxes, cap boxes and bayonets. On the trousers of the soldier at far right is a single braided pattern. Facial and uniform features are especially sharp!
The tintype is housed in a patriotic, embossed star border CDV style matting, with a printed advertisement for the photographer on the backside. Photographer Samuel W. Taylor boasted a “Mammoth Photographic Gallery” on Asylum Street. S.W. Taylor is listed in Langdon’s reference as a Civil War era photographer located in Hartford, Connecticut (where Asylum Street is located downtown). [JC]
