This sixth plate tintype is a half-length seated view of a young southern soldier wearing a gray uniform with solid, pointed cuffs of a dark material, lines of dark piping along the top and bottom edge of his collar, and shoulder tabs. He seems to have a single breast pocket low on his right (the viewer’s left) side. Seven buttons are visible down his lapel, but are not distinct enough to reveal a state seal or branch of service designation. His cap is noticeably dark colored, though not so dark as his cuffs and there is a good chance that it is blue, something not at all uncommon in early to mid-war southern uniforms. (Stonewall Jacksons forage cap comes to mind.) He has also dressed up with a prominent bowtie at his uniform collar.

There is such a variety of early war southern uniforms worn by different militia companies called into service, and supplied to volunteer organizations by communities and states, that is often impossible to pinpoint a unit even if all elements match. Even so, he is certainly southern and we think of some South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee parallels especially with this image. It is nicely cased with mat, glass and frame in a leatherette case, complete with embossed pad in place, though with separation along the hinge.  [sr]
