He wears the regulation Model 1861 style, 9-button enlisted man’s frock coat. His forage cap appears to have insignia at top, but it is not discernable. The soldier wears the Model 1861 cartridge box sling across his shoulder, with the eagle breast plate centered on his chest. Across his waste is the black leather belt and Model 1839 “US” brass buckle.
The backdrop is a wooded scene, depicting a river, trees, hillsides and a camp of Sibley-style tents. No photographer labels or identification is present. Brass trim and glass are in excellent condition. Brass matting is bright with slight tarnishing at the bottom center; the frame has a darker patina but very good detail. The image is housed in a full leatherette case in very good condition with both clasps intact. [JC]
