DOUBLE QUARTER PLATE TINTYPE OF A TRIPLE ARMED SOLDIER AND WOMAN

$450.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1054-799

The soldier pictured is a Union sergeant. He wears a dark slouch hat with an ostrich plume on one side of the crown, a dark frock coat with lightly tinted sky-blue sergeant’s chevrons on each sleeve and a white shirt and dark bowtie. The subject also wears his waistbelt with an oval “US” plate and cap box as well as his cartridge box and sling with breastplate. A close look shows that the cartridge box sits above the waistbelt which is a bit unusual. A Plymouth musket with fixed bayonet rests by his side. Stuffed in his belt is a Whitney revolver and a silver handled side knife with leather sheath. All buttons and both plates are touched with guilt.

Image is clear with excellent contrast. Some surface crackling is present but the image has to catch the light just right to see it. Otherwise it looks fine.

The image of the seated woman is matching in size. From the clothing it appears to be later than wartime. The woman could be the soldier’s daughter. The subject is seated in a fringed chair and wears a dress with dark tight narrow vertical stripes over a light background color. She has a white lace collar and the blouse has a fringed decoration at the neck with large black buttons running down the side of the blouse and skirt.

Image has good clarity and contrast. There is some slight waviness to the plate.

Both tintypes are mounted in a brass mat that is cut to hold two images. The face of the mat is stamped with a scroll like floral design that is nicely done. The mat is in a recessed wood frame that meas. approx. 8.00 x 6.75 and is 1.25 inches deep. The back of the frame is made of black leather, is on upside down and is held on by scotch tape. This can be removed.  [ad]
