Image is of a seated musician cradling his horn in his right arm.

The subject of this image wears a kepi with a dark base and a tinted red crown with a single dark line of piping running vertically at front and side. He wears a long light-colored double-breasted frock coat with two parallel rows of five buttons each. He also has a small button on his collar and for the cloth epaulette on his shoulder. Each cuff has a long, scalloped piece of piping with three widely spaced buttons. All buttons are touched with gilt. The subject also wears matching light trousers with a wide light leg stripe. His cheeks have been lightly tinted as well.

Image is clear with excellent contrast. A close look will reveal some minor very faint scratches near the subject’s face but this is only visible in the right light and at the right angle.

Brass mat and frame are the usual scrollwork variety. Full leather case has a repaired hinge. Exterior is decorated with a floral urn at center surrounded by scrolls. Exterior has moderate wear from age and storage. Interior of the case has a pillow of faded red felt with a not often seen oak leaf wreath decoration.

Confederate or Federal? Either way it is an attractive image.  [ad]
