QUARTER-PLATE TINTYPE OF TWO 151st SOLDIERS WITH BOTTLE OF “OLD RYE”.

$1,250.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 846-212

Cased image of two uniformed Federal soldiers seated on either side of a small table. Both are posed with cigars in their mouths and apparently enjoying a drink as there is a glass and a bottle on the table; the bottle detailed with “OLD RYE” in gilt by the photographer.

Soldier on left wears a frock coat and trousers, with the top of a tall riding boot appearing just at the bottom of the image. The frock has piping and there are slides and turnbuckles for shoulder scales sewn on the shoulder. Buttons were gilt highlighted, but a detail visible on the top button (the rim of a three-piece button) suggests they are state-seal or staff buttons. This soldier holds his floppy forage cap in his lap with one hand and the “old rye” bottle on the table in the other.

The soldier on the right is similarly dressed and posed. He retains the brass shoulder scales on his uniform and the cap held in his lap is laden with insignia. This includes an indistinguishable company letter within a gilt highlighted wreath with regimental numbers that appear to be “151” under.

Image mounted in usual style with copper mat, piece of glass, and copper frame in a red velvet lined case. Case shows wear and a little abuse as a 1” piece in a corner is missing and the fabric “hinge” has split. Otherwise a very nice photo of two young men “living life” as they prepare to go off to war.  [jet]
