Item Code: 1054-190

Image is ID’d as Wilbur F. Stickle of Company K, 8th Ohio Infantry. The name “STICKLE” is written in period pencil across the back with another line beneath that is difficult to read, may be his first and middle names as a capital “F” is visible.

Stickle stands in front of a painted backdrop of two Sibley tents along the right side and a pastoral scene on the left. He is posed with one hand resting on his hip. Stickle wears a light colored slouch hat with a low crown, an open dark shell jacket with nine gilt buttons running down the front, a military vest tinted sky-blue with nine gilt buttons, sky-blue tinted trousers and dark boots that come up to the knee.

Image has excellent clarity. Contrast is a bit on the darker side but not too much.

Photo is housed in the usual scrollwork brass mat and frame and comes in a very nice leather case with a floral and geometric pattern. Hinge has been nicely repaired and both brass hooks and eyes are present.

Wilbur F. Stickle was born in Burbank, Ohio on January 18, 1848. He was listed as 18 years old when he enlisted as a private in Company K, 8th Ohio Infantry on February 23, 1864. While he was with the 8th Ohio it saw action at the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. On June 24, 1864 the 8th Ohio headed for home and Stickle was transferred to Company B, 4th Ohio Infantry Battalion with whom he finished out the war. Stickle was discharged as a corporal on July 12, 1865.

After the war Stickle lived in Akron and worked as a housepainter, a dressmaker and finally a dance master. He was also in the opera house business.

He died in Akron, Ohio by suicide on October 24, 1911 and is buried there in Glendale Cemetery.  [ad]
