The image features a scene at Camp Wikoff in New York. It shows a man on horseback with dozens of canvas tents in the background.

Camp Wikoff is one of the more famous camps of the Spanish American War. Many military units spent their last days as an organization at the New York camp. The government had realized that with the outbreak of disease in Cuba and Puerto Rico, the returning soldiers could not be immediately sent back to their homes, since the communicable diseases they may carry - yellow fever, malaria, etc. - may be carried home with them. The idea was started to create an isolated camp where the men could first be cleared of disease before being released. Major General Joseph Wheeler was in command of the camp. He purchased supplies, hired doctors and nurses, and had a bakery, water filtration plant, and a laundry facility constructed. Water was piped to each camp, resulting in the installation of twelve miles of water lines.

Stereoview is on an ivory mount with “STROHMEYERR & WYMAN PUBLISHERS, NEW YORK, N.Y.” on the left edge and “SOLD ONLY BY UNDRWOOD & UNDERWOOD NEW YOUR, LONON, TORONTO CANADA, OLLAWA KANSAS” on the right.

The caption at the bottom of the mount reads, “THE DENTENTION CAMP FROM MAJOR GEL’L WHEELER’S HEADQUARTERS, CAMP WIKOFF, COPYRIGHT 1893 BY STROHMEYER AND WYMAN”. The image is clear with good contrast. Slight surface dirt is present. Reverse is blank.    [sm]
