The face of this Pattern 1839 oval cartridge plate has a nice dark patina with light scattered discoloration. The upper edge of the plate just above the letter “S” has what looks to be some thin white ink or water based paint.

The reverse has about 95% of the lead fill with just a bit missing off the surface. Both hooks are present and rusted. One is bent.

This plate was recovered on the battlefield of White Oak Swamp which was one of the Seven Days Battles before Richmond.
