This is the skin only of a Burnside Pattern eagle breast plate. It is smaller than the usual Model 1826 eagle breast plate for the cartridge box. The face is dark and discolored but the details can be made out. There is a small freeze crack in the bottom edge. Reverse is devoid of any lead fill or hooks. Most of back has a green patina.
With the item is an old typed tag that reads “UNION ARMY CARTRIDGE BOX SLING EMBLEMS GAINES’ MILL MAY, 1966.”
The battle of Gaines Mill was fought on June 27, 1862 and was part of the Seven Days Battles before Richmond.
