This relic is a .44 Allen & Wheelock Army center hammer revolver. The piece is near complete and has been cleaned leaving the pitted metal surface behind. It has a 7.50 inch long barrel that is half round and half octagon. It has a frozen six shot cylinder with only two nipples visible. The rest are buried in crud.
The hammer and grips are gone as is one side of the frame. No markings are visible. The trigger is present and the trigger guard is cracked. It appears that the weapon developed some trouble with the firing mechanism causing the weapon to be taken apart and abandoned.
You don’t see many of these in dug condition. Area of recovery is unknown.
