This small group of relics consists of two pieces. The first is an iron square-head nail that meas. approx. 2.50 inches long. The second is a small iron tack which has a wide round head and a short body that meas. approx. 1.00 inch long. Both items have a light coating of surface rust but are in solid condition.
With the two pieces mentioned above is an undated period ink invitation to meet the Captain of the Kearsarge. The document meas. approx. 4.50 x 7.00 inches and reads :

Dear Sir,
A public reception of Capt. Winslow of the Kearsarge will be given by the City Council of Roxbury at Institute Hall on Tuesday evening Nov. 22nd at 7 ½ O’clock. After the public reception the Committee and Guests will meet Capt. Winslow at the Norfolk House. The pleasure of your company is requested.

Also with the group is a small piece of brown paper with a late 19th Century inscription that reads “PIECES OF THE KEARSARGE THAT TOOK THE ALABAMA IN THE CIVIL WAR. GIVEN ME BY MRS. AVERY VALLEJO, CALIF. 1918.” There is also a modern typed label repeating the information given above.
The period document is completely legible with light staining and chipping across the bottom. The brown paper note is missing some pieces along the bottom and one edge.
The USS Kearsarge was a Mohican-class sloop-of-war that is best known for her defeat of the Confederate commerce raider CSS Alabama off the coast of Cherbourg, France on June 16, 1864. She was commanded by Captain John Winslow.
