Here is a seldom seen artifact of Civil War usage at times described as looking like an old time ‘window weight.’ The small, blunt-nosed, all-iron field artillery projectile is an excavated Ellsworth Bolt. Only 3.25” long, the cylindrical-shaped, slightly tapered solid projectile has a diameter of 1.4” and was used in the Ellsworth gun. The body, fitted into a cup at the end of a brass cartridge, was wound with tallow-soaked cording that was forced into the gun’s grooves. Constructed of cast iron, this artillery round may be of Confederate manufacture as several identical bolts were recovered from the Alabama River at the site of the Selma Arsenal. Body wears a pleasing chocolate brown color and exhibits a smooth, rust-pitted surface overall. Does have few areas of surface cracking and what appears to be a single, small impact mark. This seldom seen, excavated CS “Blunt-Nosed” Ellsworth blot makes a great addition to any Civil War field artillery display.
